What Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract does

  • Softens and smooths the skin
  • Helps hold water on the skin
  • Helps soothe dry or irritated-feeling skin

Oat kernel extract is made from the inner part of the oat seed, the grain inside the hull. Oat kernels are processed with water or another solvent, which pulls out selected parts such as beta-glucans (plant fibers that hold water), plant proteins, and small antioxidant compounds called avenanthramides.

Formulators use it for its gentle, hydrating feel and because it blends easily with other ingredients. In sunscreens it adds comfort and softness; it does not block UV rays, since the UV filters do that job. On skin it spreads smoothly and leaves a soft, lightly cushioned finish.

Good for

Suits dry, rough, or easily irritated skin, and is common in gentle, everyday formulas, including sunscreens.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Does oat kernel extract block the sun?

No. Oat kernel extract is there for comfort and softness in a sunscreen. The UV filters in the formula do the actual sun blocking, so keep using the sunscreen as directed.

Is oat kernel extract the same as colloidal oatmeal?

Not quite. Colloidal oatmeal is finely ground whole oat. Oat kernel extract is a processed version that concentrates selected parts of the kernel. Both are gentle and used for comfort.
