What Behentrimonium Chloride does

  • Softens hair and smooths the cuticle
  • Reduces static and flyaways
  • Helps hair slip apart while detangling

Behentrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound, often shortened to a quat. It is made from behenyl, a long fatty chain usually sourced from plant oils, joined to a positively charged nitrogen group. Because hair carries a slight negative charge, the positive end is drawn to it and stays there after rinsing.

Formulators use it in conditioners, shampoos, hair masks, hair color and leave-in products to smooth the hair surface and cut down on tangles. The long fatty chain adds slip and a soft, silky feel without a heavy coat. It is commonly paired with fatty alcohols in conditioning formulas.

Frequently asked questions

Is behentrimonium chloride safe for hair?

It is widely used in hair care and is generally well tolerated in rinse-off products. Like most conditioning ingredients, some people with very sensitive scalps may notice irritation. If you have a known sensitivity, check with a dermatologist before trying a new product.

Does behentrimonium chloride build up on hair?

It can leave a thin layer on hair over time, especially with heavy daily use. Clarifying shampoo once in a while can help clear it. Many people with fine hair choose lighter conditioners and rinse well to avoid a weighed-down feel.
