What Benzophenone-4 does

  • Absorbs ultraviolet light
  • Helps keep formulas stable in light
  • Dissolves easily in water-based products

Benzophenone-4 is a synthetic UV filter. It is a sulfonated form of benzophenone-3, which means a sulfonic acid group has been added to its structure. That group makes it water-soluble, so it blends easily into gels, lotions and rinse-off washes. It mostly absorbs light in the UVB range.

In body washes, cleansers and after-sun products, its role is largely about keeping the formula stable under light, since UV can fade colors and change scents over time. It does not act as sunscreen once rinsed away. Because it dissolves rather than leaving an oily layer, its feel depends mostly on the rest of the formula.

Frequently asked questions

Is Benzophenone-4 the same as oxybenzone?

No, but they are related. Benzophenone-4 is a sulfonated form of benzophenone-3, which is also called oxybenzone. The added sulfonic acid group makes benzophenone-4 water-soluble, so it behaves differently in formulas.

Can Benzophenone-4 irritate skin?

Any ingredient can irritate sensitive skin, including UV filters. Patch test new products on a small area first. If redness, itching or stinging continues, stop using the product and ask a doctor or dermatologist.
