Carrageenan comes from red seaweed. Producers wash and dry the seaweed, then use hot water, often with a little alkali, to pull out its long chains of sugar molecules. These chains do the thickening. Different types, named kappa, iota and lambda, form gels of different firmness.

Formulators use it because it thickens well at low levels and helps oil and water stay mixed in creams and lotions. In washes and conditioners, it gives a slippery, cushioned feel. In sunscreens, it can help keep the mix smooth and evenly spread. It is generally well tolerated by most skin types.
