What Geranyl Acetate does

  • Adds a soft, fruity-floral scent
  • Blends well with floral and citrus notes
  • Helps other scent notes feel rounded

Geranyl Acetate is an ester, a molecule formed when geraniol, a floral alcohol, joins with acetic acid. It occurs naturally in some plant essential oils, and much of what is used in beauty products is made synthetically through the same reaction.

Formulators use it to build a sweet, fruity-floral note, often blended with rose, citrus or green notes. It is a clear liquid that does not mix with water but blends easily into oils and alcohol. In a cream or serum it usually sits in the fragrance part of the formula and is used in small amounts.
