What Kaolin does

  • Absorbs excess oil from skin
  • Gently polishes during cleansing
  • Adds softness and smooth texture
  • Helps powders spread evenly

Kaolin is a naturally occurring clay. It is mined from the ground, then cleaned and dried to become a fine white powder. Compared with some other clays, it swells much less in water, which makes it easier for formulators to work with in creams and washes.

Formulators use kaolin to soak up extra oil, add bulk and softness, and help powders spread evenly. In cleansers and body washes it can add a mild polishing effect. In bronzers and mascaras, it helps give a smooth, even texture. On skin, it feels soft and slightly powdery as it dries.

Good for

Suits oily and combination skin, and people who want a gentle cleanser or a soft, powdery finish in makeup.

Be careful if
