What Laureth-2 does

  • Lifts oil and dirt from skin and hair
  • Creates a soft, bubbly foam
  • Blends oils and water into one formula
  • Helps thicken some liquid cleansers

Laureth-2 starts with lauryl alcohol, a fatty alcohol usually derived from plant oils such as coconut or palm kernel, though it can also be made synthetically. It is then ethoxylated, meaning a short chain of ethylene oxide units is attached. The number in the name, 2, is the average count of those units.

Formulators use it because it cleans well and foams easily, and it gives a smooth, soft-feeling lather. It is often blended with other cleansers to balance the feel. In liquid shampoos and body washes, it can also help thicken the formula. It usually rinses off cleanly, without leaving a heavy film.

Good for

Suits everyday body washes, cleansers, shampoos and baby washes, especially where a mild, foamy feel is wanted.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is Laureth-2 safe?

Laureth-2 is widely used in rinse-off cleansers and is generally considered well tolerated. Like most cleansing agents, it can feel drying for some people, especially with frequent use or sensitive skin. If a product stings or leaves skin tight, rinse well and try a gentler formula.

Is Laureth-2 the same as SLES?

No. Laureth-2 is a nonionic surfactant, so it carries no electric charge. Sodium laureth sulfate has an added sulfate group, making it a stronger, more intense cleanser. Laureth-2 is generally gentler and is often used alongside other cleansers.
