What PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides does

  • Helps oil and water mix evenly
  • Helps lift oil and makeup from skin
  • Leaves a light, smooth feel

PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides starts with caprylic and capric fatty acids, usually derived from coconut or palm oil, which are bonded to glycerin. A short chain of polyethylene glycol is then attached to make the molecule water-friendly. The 6 in the name is the average number of glycol units added. The result is a nonionic ingredient, meaning it carries no electrical charge.

Formulators use it because it helps oil and water blend into one smooth mix, which keeps lotions evenly blended. It also helps lift oily residue away during cleansing. In the final product it usually feels light and non-greasy, so it fits well in rinse-off and leave-on products.

Good for

Well suited to cleansers, micellar waters, body washes and lotions, where a light, even blend matters.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides safe for sensitive skin?

It is generally well tolerated and appears in many gentle cleansers and lotions. If your skin reacts easily, patch test a product on your inner arm first. Stop using anything that stings or causes redness, and see a dermatologist if irritation lasts.

What does the PEG part of the name mean?

PEG stands for polyethylene glycol, a water-attracting chain of repeating units. The number after it, here 6, shows the average number of units attached. Chain length helps decide how a molecule mixes with water and oil.
