What Polyquaternium-10 does

  • Conditions and softens hair
  • Reduces static and flyaways
  • Helps detangle wet hair
  • Forms a light film on skin

Polyquaternium-10 starts with cellulose, the fiber that gives plants their structure. Chemists modify it by attaching positively charged groups, so it becomes a cationic, or positively charged, polymer. Hair and skin carry a slight negative charge, so it is drawn to them.

Formulators use it for slip, softness and a light film that makes hair easier to comb. It also helps reduce static. In a cleanser or moisturizer, it gives a smooth, cushioned feel that you notice while rinsing and once dry.

Good for

Suits shampoos, conditioners, cleansers and moisturizers that aim to leave hair or skin feeling soft, smooth and easy to comb.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is Polyquaternium-10 safe to use?

It is common in hair and skin products and is generally well tolerated. Like any ingredient, it may not suit every person, so a patch test is a sensible step if you have sensitive skin. Check the full label for other ingredients that may matter to you.

Does Polyquaternium-10 cause buildup on hair?

It can, because it is a polymer that clings to hair over time. Buildup is more likely with frequent use and on fine hair. A clarifying shampoo used now and then can help keep hair light. Rinsing well and adjusting how often you condition also helps.
