What Proline does

  • Draws in and holds water
  • Helps skin and hair feel smooth
  • Supports softer, conditioned hair

Proline is one of the twenty standard amino acids, the small molecules that link together to build proteins. Your body can make it on its own. Collagen, the main structural protein in skin, is especially rich in proline and hydroxyproline, a close relative. Cosmetic proline is usually produced by fermentation or chemical synthesis and then purified.

Formulators like it because it is small, gentle, and attracts water, so it helps a formula hold moisture. It blends easily with other ingredients and is common in serums, cleansers, moisturizers and conditioners. In the final product it usually feels light and smooth, without a heavy or greasy residue.

Good for

Suits most skin and hair types, especially dry or dehydrated skin and hair.

Frequently asked questions

Is proline the same as collagen?

No. Collagen is a large protein made of many amino acids, and proline is one of those building blocks. In skincare, proline is a small molecule used mainly to help a formula attract and hold water.

Is proline safe for sensitive skin?

It is generally well tolerated, since it is a natural amino acid. Still, any ingredient can irritate a particular person, so patch test new products first and stop using anything that stings or causes redness.
