What Steareth-2 does

Steareth-2 is made by attaching a short chain of ethylene oxide to stearyl alcohol, a waxy fatty alcohol. The 2 tells you the average number of those units per molecule. The result has an oil-loving tail and a water-loving head, so it can bridge oil and water.

Formulators use it mainly as an emulsifier. In mascara, it helps waxes and pigments mix into water-based formulas and spread evenly. In deodorants and creams, it helps the blend stay stable and resist separating. In the finished product, it adds little feel of its own, so texture comes from the whole formula.
