Tetrasodium EDTA

Tetrasodium EDTA is the salt form of EDTA, a chelating agent that binds metal ions in water so they cannot disturb a formula. It is on the label of 80 products in our library. Checked against our library November 6, 2026.

The catch: none for most people; check the full product list if your skin reacts easily.

What Tetrasodium EDTA does

  • Binds calcium and magnesium from hard water
  • Helps keep formulas clear and consistent
  • Supports preservatives by tying up metal ions

Tetrasodium EDTA is a manufactured salt. It starts from EDTA, a synthetic molecule, and is neutralized with sodium so it dissolves easily in water. It is not a plant or animal ingredient.

Formulators add it to hold onto metal ions, such as calcium and magnesium found in hard water. Left alone, those ions can cloud a formula, dull its color, or reduce how well some preservatives work. Tetrasodium EDTA keeps them tied up, so shampoos, cleansers and body washes stay clear and consistent. It also shows up in mascara. In use, you will not notice it; it does not change how a product feels.

Good for

Suits everyday cleansers, shampoos and body washes, especially formulas used with hard water.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is tetrasodium EDTA safe to use?

Tetrasodium EDTA is widely used in cosmetics and is generally well tolerated. Like any ingredient, a small number of people may notice irritation, so patch testing a new product is a sensible habit.

Is tetrasodium EDTA the same as EDTA?

They are closely related. EDTA is the acid form, while tetrasodium EDTA is its sodium salt. The sodium version dissolves more easily in water, which is why it is often the form used in water-based products.
