What Tin Oxide does

  • Adds opacity so colors look solid
  • Provides a white base for shades
  • Helps brighten and lighten color blends

Tin Oxide is made from tin, a metal usually mined from a mineral called cassiterite. Cassiterite is itself a natural form of tin dioxide, so the refined powder is closely related to the ore. After processing, it becomes a fine white powder ready for cosmetic use.

Formulators use it mainly as a white pigment and opacifier. It hides the base color underneath and helps shades look bright and solid. It is most often seen in color products such as lip gloss and eyeshadow. It does not dissolve in water or oil, so it stays as tiny particles spread through the product. The powder is smooth and blends easily into creams, gels and powders.

Good for

Suits anyone who likes bright, opaque color in makeup, such as lip gloss, eyeshadow and eyeliner.

Be careful if

Nothing in particular for most skin types.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tin Oxide safe for skin?

Tin Oxide does not carry any of our family flags, and it shows up in lotions and makeup. As with any product, a patch test on a small area is a sensible first step if your skin is sensitive.

Is Tin Oxide the same as titanium dioxide?

No. Both are white powders that add opacity, but they are different compounds. Tin Oxide is tin combined with oxygen, while Titanium Dioxide is titanium combined with oxygen. Check the exact name on a label to tell them apart.
